At Alive Studios, we are often faced with film that many would consider beyond saving. One of our recent projects involved a 16mm reel shot in 1951 that had sadly succumbed to the dreaded vinegar syndrome. Over more than 70 years of storage, the film had shrunk, warped, and become extremely fragile.
What is Vinegar Syndrome?
Vinegar syndrome is a type of chemical decay that affects acetate film stock. As the acetate base breaks down, it releases acetic acid, producing a strong vinegar smell. Over time, this causes:
Shrinkage and warping – the film no longer runs smoothly through a projector or scanner
Loss of image stability – jittering, weaving, and distortion of frames
Colour fading and detail loss – images look dull or washed out
Eventual unplayability – if untreated, the film becomes brittle and unusable
This 1951 reel showed all of these issues, making the restoration a demanding process.

The Restoration Process
At Alive Studios, we use state-of-the-art Phoenix 5K film scanners and custom tools to stabilise and repair shrunken reels. For this project, we:
Cleaned and prepared the fragile reel for scanning
Captured every frame in high resolution despite shrinkage
Applied advanced AI image stabilisation to correct warping
Used our Colour Magic system for colour grading and correction
Reduced noise and flicker while retaining authentic film texture
The client received two versions:
The raw unaltered capture, a faithful digital copy of the original film
The fully remastered version, enhanced and restored for modern viewing
Why This Matters
Every reel of cine film is a piece of history. Without intervention, thousands of hours of family memories, local history, and cultural treasures risk being lost forever due to vinegar syndrome and other forms of film decay.
This 1951 16mm film is a striking example of what can be achieved — transforming something once thought unwatchable into a digital file that can now be enjoyed and preserved for generations to come.
