SCI-FI Meets Super 8

Cara Delevingne Is a Super Sexy Robot Shot on a Kodak Super 8

Using an early prototype of the new Kodak Super 8 camera, which will be commercially available later this year, Renell revealed Cara’s candid side as she was photographed by Mariano Vivanco in a variety of vintage Mugler outfits.

Striking set design, mind-bending effects and awe-inspiring performances from some of the best actors in the world – there’s a reason that French director Luc Besson’s latest cinematic offering, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, is one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer.

Celebrating the launch of Besson’s film, actor and model Cara Delevingne – who stars in the film alongside Dane DeHann – was shot by Mariano Vivanco for the August cover of British GQ. Kodak and photographer Renell Medrano were granted exclusive access to the Barbarella-themed shoot in Paris to create a behind-the-scenes short film, captured entirely on the brand new Super 8 camera .

Based on the cult French comic book Barbarella, Roger Vadim’s 1968 sci-fi film featuring Jane Fonda as a blonde-haired, silver-booted incarnation of the iconic astronaut from the 41st century – seized imaginations around the world.

Barbarella’s genre-defining incandescence still reverberates beyond the realm of sci-fi, with Jean-Paul Gaultier nodding to Barbarella as a major influence for the visually tantalizing costumes that appeared in Luc Besson’s classic, The Fifth Element.

Alive Studios sponsor local boxer ‘Zane Turner’

Despite international recognition as one of the leading film transfer houses in the world, Alive Studios remains a down to earth, family-run business, with their feet firmly planted in the Devon sand.
Renowned for their unique skills in transferring and restoring old Cine Film and Video Tapes to Digital, co-founder Steven is now using his skills in his beloved sport of boxing…

Originally from Torquay, a move to a new Teignmouth studio earlier this year gives the team an unrivalled view of the ocean from their desks, highlighting their love of the sea and all things Devon.

“We are so passionate about our community” explains Jennie, MD of Alive Studios “and we try to support local business and enterprise wherever possible”.  From buying thousands of boxes of local fudge to package with orders, “which our London clients love!” to supporting local events and people, we ask the team why they’ve chosen Zane Turner this year.

“We are always looking for exciting ways to use our skills locally” enthuses creative Director Steven Flowers, “and this year we couldn’t have found a better project to get behind than supporting a home-grown sportsman, so dedicated to his sport, we believe he could really put Devon on the map”.

With three children, two of which help run the studio, the owners explain “it’s essential we encourage local young people to follow their dreams, and if local businesses can make even a small difference, then that’s amazing, and I hope my kids get the same chance when they need it.”

Alive Studios will be helping to make short films to promote up-and-coming boxer Zane Turner, and hopefully gain him a strong following of fans in and around Devon who can enjoy his rise to fame and glory as an international boxing champion….

Streaming revenue outpaced discs sales for the first time in 2016

For the first time in the US, streaming revenue outpaced disc sales in 2016, according to trade organization Digital Entertainment Group. UHD Blu-ray stemmed the losses somewhat but disc sales are on the decline.
Streaming is now a bigger business

The total market for home entertainment in the US has been on the decline for over a decade as Hollywood continues to refuse to adjust its window business model that mandates that movies travel from cinema to disc to subscription. The music industry faced the same challenge – and years of declining sales – before it finally embraced streaming, which helped the music industry return to growth.

For the first time ever, streaming revenue eclipsed disc sales in 2016. For the full year, consumers in the US spent $10.3 billion on streaming ($6.2b on subscription streaming + $4.1b on electronic sales and rentals). Streaming revenue was up 15% over 2015. Subscription services like Netflix grew the most. Pay-per-view services like iTunes also grew but not as fast as in recent years.

Sales of DVD and Blu-ray on the other hand were down almost 9.5% (over 2015) to $5.5b and physical rentals were down 17.8% (over 2015) to $2.5b. Total disc revenue in the US in 2016 was $8b.

So $10.3b for streaming versus $8.0b for discs in 2016, according to DEG. And that is not even the full story because Amazon Prime Video revenues are not included in the figures.

2016 represents a tipping point, especially when you consider that Hollywood introduced UHD Blu-ray. The format has helped stem the losses for disc sales but has done little to reverse the negative trend.

Do You Have Cine Film Footage of Butlins?

Then We Want To Talk To You! Los Angeles based PalmDoorFilms have asked if any of our customers might be able to help them find some good Cine Film footage of Butlins Holiday Camps between 1950-1965.The film-makers are working on an independent documentary chronicling the rise, fall and resurrection of Joe Meek – the extraordinary record producer and songwriter from the South West of England.

The two filmmakers have already traveled across the UK and the US to interview over 70 friends, family members, colleagues, employees, enthusiasts, critics and biographers of Meek – and with the project almost complete are looking for some final archive film to illustrate life in England during the 19050s to mid-60s.

If you have good footage of Butlins during this period – especially Clacton or Skegness, do get in touch with Alive Studios, and if suitable we’ll put you in touch with the producers to see if your film is any use to the project.
