Cine Film FAQ's

Do I get my films back?

Yes. We give you everything back cleaned and and ready for archiving.

Do you transfer to DVD or Blu-ray ?

No. Discs are becoming obsolete and are nowhere near as useful as having a full digital version. We provide you with the full HD files on either USB memory stick or portable hard-drive, depending on the size of the order.

What transfer method do you use?

Our exclusive 2K and 4K systems use innovative technology to gently guide the film over the scanner, where digital images are made of each and every cell of your film. You may have heard this referred to as a 'frame scanning'. There is no screen involved so no loss of quality or blurriness is possible. This is a clear, sharp scan of every single cell of your film. These images are then built up to form a movie. Once on the computer, the film is cleaned up manually by our expert team of graphic artists. Then through the software, with careful editing to remove unwanted sections such as leader-tape. Finally, your editor will watch each section of film and apply colour correction filters to restore the natural colours and remove many of the horrible tints caused over time.

My film is damaged - can it still be transferred?

Yes. We specialise in very old, damaged film at Alive Studios so we have no problem handling it. We do not generally charge any more money for film that is in a poor state, but if we do feel it requires additional time we would always tell you as soon as we saw it so you have no worry about your price increasing. Where splices break, we repair them without charge. If a film is temperamental and doesn't want to go through we will always try it in several machines to make sure it's had it's best shot at a transfer. Where sprocket holes are punctured or torn, we will still transfer the film, often with no visible problems. However, some sprocket damage prevents a steady image from being obtained, in which case we transfer the whole film, then edit out any sections which 'jump' or drag because of the damage. This way we keep as much film as possible, and with careful editing you don't even notice any is missing.

Can you scan Negative film?

Yes we do scan negative cine film

Can you transfer sound from cine film?

Yes we can transfer both optical and magnetic soundtracks from 8mm and 16mm film.

What is the best format to archive my footage?

You can choose from either Digital files HD (MPEG4) or ProRes 422. both come in HD or UHD 4K
These are provided on a USB stick or portable USB hard-drive.

The Digital copy is more versatile because you can plug the stick straight into the USB port of a TV and they will just play, whereas the ProRes files won’t play on a TV until you’ve converted them to a more suitable format. The Prores files however contain more colour data so they are better if you intend to carry out in-depth editing on the films. If you intend only to edit in terms or cutting and re-arranging the order, adding some titles and music, then the digital copy will be perfect for you.

Media format times

Digital HD 10mb/s 4.6GB/hr, 4K 50mb/s 22GB/hr)

ProRes 422 HD Data Rate: 147mb/s 55GB/hr

ProRes 422 4K Data Rate: 354mb/s 160GB/hr
